Washington State Air Quality: Analysis of air quality of at-risk communities and their proximity to Toxic Release Inventory sites across Washington State
2022 Salish Sea Symposium
Bellingham, WA | May 2022
This project aims to geographically compare the proximity of harmful air pollutants (represented by Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) site locations), air quality monitors, and at-risk populations in Washington state. At-risk groups are categorized as people under 5 and people over 6, and marginalized groups such as people under the poverty line and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). All of which are symbolized at the block group level. These variables are given assigned weights based on their proximity to the standardized kilometer buffers around TRI Sites and Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors. The product is a series of choropleth census-block-group maps, representing which block groups for those specific demographics are likely not being monitored accurately.
